Rhebs Is Rambling

This is my way of letting my family and friends all over the world catch the many goings-on of our ‘stateside’ life rather than writing them one by one.  I sure don’t write impeccably as you can see English is my second language so my rattling through words are at times long-winded and incoherent.  I, myself sometimes get horrified by my own grammar and spelling mistakes but then again that’s just goes to show the imperfect real Me.

Hurricane Jeanne is slowly weakening!

Thank God! Hurricane Jeanne is slowly weakening and becomes a tropical storm now although gusty winds and heavy rain continues to flush over parts of northern Florida (Jacksonville) and southern Georgia.

Pounding rains and stiff winds that included a likely tornado was pouring heavily in our place a little over two hours ago and I was petrified! Part of our master’s bedroom near the window was soaked and my Darling husband has already run a steamer to suck up the water deep down so as not to create mildew otherwise that would eventually damage the carpet.

This afternoon, we went to Jacksonville Beach to see what’s going on there.  That was the very first time I saw a dancing beach.  It looks like the water was boiling at the highest temperature and it's scary.  My mother-in-law and my darling husband thought that was pretty!  Sheesh!

Poor Florida!

We are again (4th times in 6 weeks) hammered by another harsh hurricane, which made me very fretful!  I woke up at 3:00AM this morning to track where Hurricane Jeanne heads off because yesterday’s forecast was; it’s going to strike the east coast area of Florida and coming right straight in St. Augustine and Jacksonville.

Hurricane Jeanne made a landfall late last night with packing winds strong enough to wreck mobile homes, tress and cut power for thousands of residents in the east coast Florida. Blinding rain continues to fall here as Jeanne moves inland.  Here in Jacksonville, we are getting the outer bands of the hurricane and it looks like hurricane Jeanne will curl Orlando or Tampa then heads off northward towards Georgia and Carolinas.  It looks like it's following the path of Hurricane Frances three weeks ago.  Residents continue to hunker down as this very serious hurricane swirls along the area.

Jeanne remains a huge concern now as it moves inland and moves through the Florida Peninsula. The threat for damaging winds, flooding rains, tornadoes and power outages will continue throughout the week. All establishments are again closed today and probably until tomorrow.

Some residents rode out the storm.  I thought my mother-in-law and my darling husband are crazy as they plan to go to the beach today to take a quick look of the sea waves.

Our wireless network is now secured!

Last night, I purchased a NETGEAR 802.11 G - 108Mbps Wireless Firewall Router to replace our LYNKSYS 802.11 B - 11Mbps Wireless Router. Bill and Marie came over to visit me at work last night so I took the opportunity to invite them to come over so Bill can secure our home network.  I owe Bill big time co'z  besides being home service it's also free of charge.  Thanks Bill and Marie :-)

The other night, I purchased a USB IOGEAR Print Server and I was able to install and get it work with the help of Mr. Bill of course.  Mr. Bill is a computer wiz, an expert techie guy who knows the in and out of computer networking and anything about computers. I wish I had his brain and skills!

Overcoming Our Sweet Tooth

If you were like my darling husband and I who were born with sweet tooth, the luscious lure of sugar is very hard to resist! However, it is not impossible to overcome it only if we keep focused on our goals and bear in mind how detrimental that sweet stuff really is.

I have to give a round of applause to my darling husband for doing his best to stay away from sweets.  Yesterday, one of his co-nurses brought a cake to work. One of the luscious cakes he ever had before--it was home made from the scratch. He said he was never tempted to even take a small piece despite how enticing the cake was to satisfy his cravings.

Like many others, starting and sticking to any kind of diet is no easy task.  I can’t tell you how many times my darling husband tried different type of diet regimen yet nothing seems to be working with him.  It works for few days then all of the sudden he falls off the wagon and there he is...  back to his old bad eating habit again.

Well, not this time!  We are very determined to achieve our goals this time using this South Beach Diet.  This new regimen sounds very convincing and I believe this is going to work for him.  He still eats most of his favorite foods anyway so he doesn't starve himself but it has to be as much as possible less sugar and carbs contents. We agreed to fill our fridge with only good foods (canadian bacon, turkey bacon, chicken breast, fish, mushrooms, low-moisture part-skim mozzarella cheese, reduced fat Kraft cheese, unsalted mixed nuts, eggs, olive oil and veges such as broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, squash, cucumber, zucchini, celery and bell peppers. Boy, he makes a salivating and very delicious breakfast every morning, which I can even smell inside our bedroom and that made me jumped off the bed to have breakfast with him.  I am very excited for him and you know what? When all the dusts are settled and cleared, I will be the happiest camper in the world!  I can't wait...

Kyle’s Birthday Tomorrow

Tomorrow, I’ll be off work but I am throwing a simple birthday party for one of my pinays friends' kid so I won’t be home to organize and post the rest of the photos I took during my trip last month.

Here goes the gist of the story.  We received an invitation from Nathan & Juliet who are going to celebrate their one-year-old son’s birthday party this Saturday. “They are inviting adults to the party, right?  I thought that is supposed to be kids’ party”, darling husband’s remark.

My darling husband and I have a lengthy deliberations about how we (pinays) usually celebrate our son’s/daughter’s birthday party.  His idea is as simple as kids’ party that means throw a party for just the kids alone--parents are not included.  They were supposed to drop off their kids to the party and pick them up later.  How logical is that?  Make sense to me so OK, I was convinced!

I will be working this weekend. I have Monday and Friday off this week, I called Juliet to let her know I can’t come to the party.  She suggested that since I am off Friday and Friday is actually Kyle’s birthday, she invited me for a lunch date instead with her husband and son. I reckoned, man that would be great idea but I preferred to throw a simple party for Kyle at the DayCare Center where Leny, Ate Susan, Judith and Marilyn work. I spoke with Leny and she’s cool with the idea.  Leny is the acting boss of the daycare now so there's no problem. I am thrilled to play with bunch of cute kiddos again tomorrow. More photos to work on later...

Well, I have to go and do some home cleaning before I go to work at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon. Stay tuned in...

How does it feel to be really rich?  As I gaze at the photos of the million dollar homes in America and the richest people in the world, I wonder if these people are truly happy. I am poor yet I am truly happy :-)   If you are in for a surprise, click the link of the photos of the million dollar homes.

The Most Expensive Homes in the United States!
By: Betsy Schiffman

At a time when the average new home in the U.S. in 2003 cost $246,300, many people might find the thought of paying $34.87 million for a new home--no matter how nice--unimaginable.

But that's the average price for a home on our month-long roundup of the most expensive regional homes in the U.S. In the process, we looked at the most expensive homes in the Northeast, the South, the Midwest and the West. Not surprisingly, the majority of the most expensive homes were clustered around areas of extreme wealth, such as the Hamptons, Palm Beach and Bel Air. The most expensive region was the Northeast, which had an average home price of $47.45 million. The West came next at $43.1 million, followed by the South at $33.93 million and the Midwest at $15.02 million.

The highest priced home, an estate in Bridgehampton, Long Island, that comes with its own golf course, is currently on the market for $75 million. The lowest priced, a home in Highland Park, Ill. that fronts on Lake Michigan, is available for $8.5 million.

The point is, if you have the assets, you can have the house. The bigger, the better. Pools, tennis courts, helipads, polo fields, indoor luge tracks, you name it. Few things announce your success better than prime acreage and thousands of square-footage.

Do you think where you live is overpriced?!?!?

You may be in for a shock!

Most overpriced places in 2004
Cities where cost of living outweighs growth potential
By Betsy Schiffman

Image: Seattle

Although the Seattle metro area is home to some large American companies, its cost of living and housing are not proportionate to the job and income growth in the area.

One of the inalienable rights of American citizenship, although not one expressly cited in the Declaration of Independence, is the ability to complain about how much things cost. Whether it's a gallon of milk, a tank of gas, the price of a Broadway show or real estate prices, we find solace for the damage to our wallets with a little healthy griping.

That griping becomes even more heartfelt when the cost of living isn't keeping pace with people's incomes.

Earlier this month the U.S. Commerce Department reported a 0.7 percent dip in spending for June (a much steeper drop than the 0.1 percent drop economists were expecting), and the decline was attributed to the fact that job growth hasn't come back in yet, and personal income growth had been slight. That means residents of major metro areas such as New York or Chicago may rightfully grumble that they're paying boom economy prices for real estate in a non-booming economy.

Although residents of Boston, New York or San Francisco are obviously willing to pay dearly for housing, the financial blow is usually softened by the promise that they will be earning a decent living and may have the opportunity to advance their careers. When the economy hits a bump, however, it becomes more difficult for big city residents to justify the premiums they pay to live in areas that aren't quite as rich in opportunity as they'd hoped.

This is the third time we've compiled our list of the Most Overpriced Places. We determine our findings by looking at the cost of living, housing affordability and job and income growth of the 150 places ranked on Forbes' Best Places For Business. The places with the highest cost of living, least affordable housing and most modest job and income growth are the cities that make it to our list.

There are a few places that have made it here each year — including San Jose, Calif., and Bergen-Passaic, N.J. — but we have a few newcomers this year, too. Portland, Ore., for example, has a diverse business base, but it's been saddled with high unemployment numbers and meager job growth; and while the cost of living isn't as exorbitant as places like San Francisco, the median home price there is a good $25,000 above the national median.

A surprising newcomer is Jersey City, N.J., where the cost of living is high, partly as a result of all the New Yorkers who moved across the Hudson River in search of lower tax and housing costs. There has been a great deal of development over the past decade, with new residential and commercial buildings dotting Jersey City's waterfront overlooking lower Manhattan. The city is still mostly a commuter town, however, thanks to an improved ferry system, but there isn't much local job growth yet despite the fact that many Wall Street firms such as PNC and American Express are opening offices here.

About the rankings

The rankings in Forbes' Best Places To Do Business are based on a 1 to 150 scale, where 1 is the best and 150 is the worst. A city that ranks 150 for its cost of living, for example, is the absolute worst of all 150 places in the list. (The rankings we used in this list were based on data from Economy.com and Sperling's Best Places.) The median home prices were taken from the National Association of Realtors' fourth-quarter report on existing family home sales, where the national average was $170,800. (The median home price in Jersey City was not available, however, and the median home price in San Jose came from the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors.) The cities are ranked in the order of the most overpriced to the least overpriced.

Rankings in 2004

The Seattle metro area is home to some of the largest American corporations, such as Boeing and Microsoft. (Although Boeing moved its headquarters to Chicago, it's still one of the largest employers in the area.) But that doesn't mean that the cost of living and housing is proportionate to the job and income growth in the area. The Economic Development Council of Seattle and King County argues that there's a reason for the high housing costs--mainly because roughly 25% of local residents are in either professional or managerial positions.

To be fair, few people move to the Bergen-Passaic area in hopes of finding a job in town. The area is full of professionals who commute to and from New York. Still, local residents are almost paying big city prices to live outside the big city. In terms of job growth, the area ranked 110 out of 150, and income growth was 102 out of 150 places ranked.

Florida may have led the nation in adding new jobs last year, but Miami-Dade County's unemployment is still higher than the national average (above 7%). In a Miami Herald report, Governor Jeb Bush said Miami's lagging unemployment rate was due to the fact that Miami was "unique" because of its high costs. He got that right. The city ranked 137 out of 150 places for housing affordability and 127 out of 150 for cost of living. Living in the sand and sun isn't cheap, apparently.

"We need to improve the business climate of the Portland area, because we are racked with some of the highest unemployment rates and the lowest job-creation rates in the country. Those are unacceptable." Those were the words of Jonathan Schlueter in an Oregonian interview after he was named the executive director of the non-profit Westside Economic Alliance in Portland. During the tech boom, Oregon became a desirable destination for professionals hoping to find an affordable alternative to the Bay Area, but it ended up driving up the cost of living, and the job market hasn't quite caught up.

Some of the largest employers in Middlesex include large companies such as Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merrill Lynch, and the area's unemployment rate has been below the national average (last year it was 5.4% while the national unemployment rate was 6%), but it's not clear how many people are employed locally since Middlesex County, roughly 40 miles away from New York City, is also a major bedroom community for New York professionals.

San Jose, the largest city in the Bay Area, wasn't really considered a desirable place to live prior to the tech boom. During the late 1990s, however, as housing prices rocketed along with the stock market, it became just as expensive as its northern neighbor, San Francisco. Now the city is left with a 6.8% unemployment rate hangover, and housing costs are still among the highest in the country.

The median home price in San Francisco is $597,300, and the city ranked 145 out of 150 for job growth, making it a difficult place for Americans who haven't already made their millions in the technology industry to settle down and raise a family, or find a new job. Still, for anyone pursuing a career in the technology industry, the Bay Area is the best option.

While the Chicago economy is showing modest improvements--the unemployment rate declined by 0.9% according to the most recent statistics released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security--its job growth ranking leaves much room for improvement, and its 6.2% unemployment rate is still above the national average (currently at 5.5%). Still, the $228,100 median home price is significantly less expensive than places like San Francisco, where the median is above $500,000.

New York expensive? Fuggedaboudit! As of June 2004, the unemployment rate in New York City was a steep 7.4%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, New York still remains one of the most expensive cities in terms of the cost of living and housing affordability. But as they say, if you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere.

Although Jersey City is showing some economic promise, the cost of living is still high in relation to the local job growth. The city is trying to sell itself as its own economic hub, and even managed to persuade Wall Street financial firm Goldman Sachs to move into a new office tower on the waterfront, which is estimated to have added 1,100 jobs to Jersey City's local economy. Still, the city has a bit more growing to do before its job market catches up to the local cost of living.

I can't help it !!!

I have always had this special love for children yet I can’t seem to have my own.  My heart goes out whenever I read a story about innocent children tangled in a thorny situation. This morning, as I was checking my emails and browsing my favorite blogs, as a morning dose, I came across CG’s recent post and I can’t help myself but shed tears.

I feel for CG as well, the mother.  We all know the fact that every Mum only wants the best for her child.  However, CG, as I perused her archives, is an extraordinary Mum. She has gone through a lot of troubles and continues to strive to be the best Mum for her little bundle of joy and the best wife to her hubs, no matter how life treats her.  I admire and salute this lady!

Bea, as young as she is now, might not fully grasp what’s going on. She’s very lucky to have a Mum like CG, a family that loves her unconditionally and a step-dad who accepts and loves her as his own.

As for Summer. Children from a disbanded family will always felt threatened/jealous when another party comes in. Some children may react harshly and some turn to be a real brat/trouble maker when their parents broke up and parents remarry a stranger. Some developed into one ‘awful mean’ because their world has become that way when their parents parted ways. We probably would never be able to understand the horrors & heartaches they have dealt with when their parents got divorced.

A message for anyone out there who is contemplating to marry a man with kids in the previous marriage.

Winning the step kids’ trust should be the first priority. Befriended them and reassure them constantly of your love and support and that your being in the picture will not in any way change the relationship with their dad. Make sure that your communication line is open at all times. It is very important to take this into consideration, and be prepared to listen to what they are saying and assure them of your constant love no matter how hard this is for you and them. The secret is LOVE them with all your might. An unconditional & constant love of someone who came into their lives is very important to them. Do it slowly and constantly talk to them with love.  You see LOVE is always the answer :-) I know. I will probably get a note in my mailbox saying, *Yah right! easier said than done!*

Thank you, Andrew Russell !!!

Here, I am posting our exchange email for anybody out there who  doesn't know how to resize bunch of photos all at once.

Hi Andoy :-)

How are you two doing?

Btw, I have gazillions of photos to post for my homepage but it's taking me too much time resizing them individually using Photoshop otherwise the picture would take too much space on my server and it would be hard for my friends back home to view them using a dial up connection.

Do you know of any software that would automatically resize bunch of photos stored in one folder?

Thank you,
Rhebs

Yes.  Use Photoshop!  (All my pages are created that way).  Since Photoshop 5.5 (I think) there is an option:  FILE à AUTOMATE à Web Photo Gallery

Then fill out the 4-5 dialog boxes (colors, title, layout, size of thumbnails, size of images, where to get the pictures from, where to put them when it's done), and it will kick out a set of pages all at once!  It's pretty slick.

Another interesting tool (to pick the colors to use, if you don’t want all your galleries to be black and white) is called "ColorImpact" by Tiger Software: http://www.tigercolor.com/

You give it a base color, and it can give you any number of related color hex values (Contrasting, opposites, compliments, etc) to use for the dialog windows, text, links, and background colors. I have a crack for it somewhere. It's a small program, but very nice. I'm not so great at picking colors. What I usually do is use the Photoshop eyedropper to pick up a color from one of the photos (that's used in most of the photos), and put that value into color impact. Then, it tells me what other colors to use for everything else.

For example:
Halloween: Base color Orange (from all the pumpkins) http://www.qwe.com/2003-10-04-valas-pumpkin-patch/
Snow Pics: Light blue from sky of the snow http://www.qwe.com/2003-02-15-snow/
Summer: Green (from all the trees and stuff) http://www.qwe.com/2003-05-27-BlackHills/index.html
Car Pictures: Gold (from the interior of the car): http://www.qwe.com/2002-saturn-l300/
Creek Pictures: (greenish color of the water): http://www.qwe.com/2003-05-31-Doliver-panorams/
Needles State Park (Grey from the rock faces): http://www.qwe.com/2003-05-27-BlackHills-needles/

Our 3-day weekend honeymoon!

Whohoo!  I am still off work today!  I am really lucky to have a wonderful boss because he again consents me to take 4 days off in a row despite the fact that I was on vacation for 27 days last month. Although he grumbled a little bit about me asking too many days off but he gave in anyway. He knows I give my best (100%) when I am at work. (Iba talaga pag malakas tayo kay bossing eh)

Our 3-day weekend honeymoon in a luxurious world-class resort in Orlando turned out to be very hypnotic! My darling husband and I lived like millionaire for 3 days but now we are back to reality again of being poor. he he he

The tropical natural scenery seen from the 9th floor building of the hotel is such an enchanting place to take refuge when you are all stressed out from your daily routine.  Added to it is a room with all amenities inside; cable TV, fast access Internet connection, refrigerator filled with cold drinks, wines, chocolates and chips that made our stay even sweeter! Nothing can beat the idea of getting up in the morning with my beloved husband kissing me first thing in the morning and serving me breakfast in bed.  It really feels so good when my darling husband spoiled me lavishly.  I didn't have to do anything except to eat, take shower, relax and have “fun” day and night ;-) Life is awesome and I have nothing to complain.

I am hoping though next month we will reap the fruit of our labor because we really work hard on that plus we also spend too much for it! Imagine this ice cream costs us $23 and the room is $200 per night!  My darling husband has to go back to work today to pay for it *kawawa asawa ko*. Nonetheless, that was a fabulous honeymoon and it’s worth the price though.  Hey, we wouldn't mind going back to that place again and pay even more if that was the surest way to procreate ;-)

Meanwhile, take a look at the hotel's virtual tour video and slide show photos while I'll organize the pictures we took for later viewing. I might be able to get around doing the rest of the photos today.

H
APPY ANNIVERSARY MY BELOVED DARLING TONY!!!

I am very delighted to receive a bouquet of beautiful flowers today at work from my One and Only Darling Tony... and I also received something  special that makes my day complete ;-)

Thank you so much, Darling TSUP! TSUP!! TSUP!!!)

My Beloved True Love Tony,

For all these years that we’ve been together there is absolutely NO doubt that I married the BEST Man in the world!

When you send beautiful bouquet of flowers to me at work on special occasions like our anniversary and birthday, do you know how proud and lucky that makes me feel when I see my co-workers get green with envy?

When you go out of your way to help around the house; cook, wash dishes, do laundry, iron my clothes, sew buttons on my pants, clean the house, do grocery shopping and make my life so much easier, do you know how blessed and lucky that makes me feel?

When you hold me close, kiss me passionately and tell me how beautiful and sexy I am and that will always and forever be the only one for you, do you know how secured and ecstatic that makes me feel?

When you shower me with gifts in every Anniversary, Birthday, Valentine and Christmas, do you know how thrilled that makes me feel?

When you open the door and kiss me before I get in the car, restaurant and anyplace we go and you reach for my hand to walk with me hand in hand, do you know how "kilig" that makes me feel?

When I lay down on our coach and you start caressing me, kissing me and assuring me of your constant love and devotion, do you know how contented and fulfilled that makes me feel?

When we lay down on our bed at night and you start praying for our love, health, family, relatives and friends, do you how thankful I am to God for giving us the chance to meet, fall in love and harmoniously live as husband and wife?

When I think about you and ALL the ways you make me feel so special, loved and blessed, I wonder if you know how deeply I am in love with you.

I love so very much my Beloved Tony with all my heart, soul, mind and entire being always and forever.

With you My Beloved Darling Tony,

I’ve found someone who accepts me as I am, yet helps me to become a better person, more fulfilled person.
I’ve found someone that allows me to be strong, yet gives me comfort and support whenever I need it.
I’ve found what it seems I have been looking forever—the wonderful, and very real meaning of love.
I’ve found someone who loves me unconditionally, adores me, respects me, trusts me completely!

Thank you so much Darling for coming into my life and for making my life complete!

                                                            Love Forever and Always,

Thank God!!!

Hurricane Frances is now moving northwest and is currently passing over the Gulf of Mexico.  We are doing pretty well up here in Jacksonville except for some minor damages and as many as 250,000 residents fraught without power until now.  We are ones of the few fortunate people in the Southside, Deerwood and Baymeadows areas who didn’t experience any power outage.  It looks pretty bad on TV, but it's not that really bad because the storm actually weakened some before making a landfall last Saturday night.

Now, things are looking up! It’s 78 degrees outside with light rain and the weather forecast says this will continue to stay breezy throughout the end of this week.

We are looking forward to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary as well as my birthday in Orlando this coming weekend. My darling husband has already made two nights reservation at Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Resorts last month despite of me beseeching him to book our hotel reservations through Prieceline.com. He reasoned that he likes the idea of saving money on hotels using priceline but definitely NOT on special occasion such as our anniversary. This morning, I did squabble and hover on him again hoping to convince him to cancel that reservation so I can go to priceline.com to make new reservation to cut back on our expenses but the next thing I heard, he’s telling me to just stay at home so we won't spend on anything! *sob*sob*sob*

Now, I am relieved knowing that he still loves me the same no matter how much I get on his nerves sometimes by being so "makulit" and penny-pinching (kuripot si ako!) in a wrong time! You see, he doesn't let me get my own way all the time 'kala n'yo lang.

Sorry folks. I wasn't able to finish organizing the gazillions of photos I took during my trip but I will try to post them as soon as I can.

Hurricane Frances is stronger and even bigger than the entire state of Florida!

Things are getting pretty nasty over here in our place.  Hurricane Frances continues to storm the entire state of Florida so everybody is in panic mode. As so far, some hefty wind gusts and heavy rain have already been felt earlier this morning in Jacksonville and it looks like our weather will continue going downhill during the day with the worst of it likely Sunday night through Monday. All business establishments here in Jacksonville are closed today and probably until tomorrow so I am home bound with my darling husband... sana makabuo na kami ;-)

Hopefully, I'll get around to organize the photos I took during my trip and post them later..
