Rhebs' Health & Fitness Log

I really didn’t have all that much weight to lose… just want to trim the unsightly maybe 10 lbs around my waistline  and tummy and maybe “just maybe” get a six pack abs but boy these 10 lbs are the toughest I have ever tried to get rid off in the last two years...but of course that's also the year when I hit the big four O!  Go figure.

I eat healthy for the most part anyway, and I work-out on a regular basis at least 45 minute to an hour 4 to 5 times a week  but to no avail.  So I started keeping a
food diary to monitor my calorie intake on a day to day basis and took on Geri's challenge to run for marathon even though I never really run before but here I am now started running at age 42!

Rhebs is on NikeRunning.com

My run is automatically being fed by Nike to my   &  accounts soon after I sync my iPod Touch to iTunes in my laptop.  That means if you are on my Facebook or Twitter contacts, you'll be able to see my run right after I sync my iPod Touch to my Nike+ account.

Crossed the Finish Line in 31 Minutes!

Wow! I can hardly believe I'd be able to sustain a 10 minute per mile run and maintained the same pace all throughout the 5K race considering never had I ran that fast in the whole duration of my 16 weeks training and that's even before my leg injury. Well, truth to be told, I was numbed with Aleve (yes I popped 2 Aleve tablets before DH and I left the house at 6:30AM) plus the energy and enthusiasm of other runners are very communicable. I got carried away!!! But later at night when the pain reliever subsided, my injured shin was in so much pain again.

So for now, I am taking few weeks break from running to give my leg ample time to heal but hopefully, I'll be able to start yet another training for the Gate River Run which is slated early next year. And I also promised Geri to run with her in the Chicago Marathon late next year :-)

Here's the overall result of the Susan G. Komen 5K Race for Breast Cancer Cure 2009. I was misplaced, categorized with Men under 3 years old and it says I am only one year old. LOL (See my name in #58) If they put me in the category of Women age 40-44, I still would have been in the same place. Either way, I am really a loser! LOL Still I can't get over the fact that the 75 year old man beat me to the finish line by 8 seconds!!! The guy is so amazing that I couldn't even believe he could run that fast!!!

Anyway, I don't have that many pictures to post this time. I just realized that I can't really rely on DH when it comes to taking pictures :-(. He couldn't even find me in the mob of runners (estimated to be 5,000 runners/walkers participated in the race... well, how can he? The midget was in the middle of giant racers LOL so no photos of me while running; not even when I crossed the finish line because he didn't expect his injured wife can actually finish the race in just a matter of 31 minutes. (Darling, next time don't underestimate my short legs LOL) although unknowingly, he got me in the very last footage of his video while he's filming the first, second, third and fourth batches of finishers.

This is the only picture of me he took during and right after the race while I was still huffing and puffing.

(Click the photo  to see more pictures prior to the race)

Overall, my experience in joining this race for a great cause was awesome and at the same time very touching. I was deeply moved by the testimonies of some breast cancer survivors. I bawled my eyes out knowing that I and my generous sponsors are now part of the breast cancer cure.

To Gazel, Kuya D and Ate G, Ms. Winnie, Mr. RonDr. Stark, Dr Lewis, Karen,  Ms. Brenda,  Stuart,  Ate Perla,  Tony,  Erica, Del and Mom, in behalf of Susan G. Komen’s Foundation, I thank you from the button of my heart for your very generous donations and support. Know that you are all part of this great cause!
God bless!!!!

Cheer for Number 1467 !

DSC05929Yes, that would be tomorrow morning at 9AM.  DH and I are going to be leaving the house as early as 6:30AM though.

With the weather forecast being on high 71 °F and low 53 °F not really sure if I have to wear long sleeve or sleeveless.  Anyway, here's me dressing for my race :-D

(Click the photo  to see more pictures)

Too bad my mother-in-law is not able to see me run for her cause because she's in the hospital right now recovering from back surgery besides I don't think she is able to withstand the crowd and etc in downtown considering she's been having a lot of pain--hips and back pain that is but she said she's going to be looking for me on TV.

That's it for today folks... and wish me luck :-)

Rest

I am feeling a little better this morning despite the 3 miles walked, jogged and ran yesterday.  I went to see the doctor this afternoon and it looks like my shin is healing up ok but he suspected there's a pinch nerve or ligaments right below my calf muscles. He suggested I'll pop 2 Aleve tablets an hour before the race and that should take care of the pain then he told me to go slow and blah, blah, blah (which sounded like DH) and replied, "Yeah, I hear you too Doc... my husband said the same thing over and over again but I am stubborn ;-)

Doing great and I am down to 110.8 lbs this morning!  Yaay!! You noticed how I gained so quickly and lose so quickly too if I only eat nothing but healthy food on portion control but you know it's just hard sometimes to control the portion especially when we're dining out. Sigh

3.14 Miles Outdoor Walk, Jog & Run

The countdown has started… 4 days before my race and I am glad my shin feels a little better this morning so I decided to do a short walk/jog/run just to see if I can actually do the 3 miles... well, still a little sore but the pain is bearable and I was able to walk, jog and run for  3.14 miles in 48 minutes this morning.

DH was really upset with me this morning when he saw me running again and he even refused to kiss me when we bumped into each other on the streeet.  I should have listened to him as he never fails to remind me every time I run to go slow and train with the pro but I am stubborn that way.... had I listened to him, maybe I would not have injured my shin.... but then I won't learn a lesson right?

We'll have to see how I feel tomorrow.

There are too many junk food at the office today because two of my officemates celebrated their birthdays at the same time.  Of course I have to partake again on the cake eating contest...right?  I had a serving of each cake flavor: chocolate, banana and Marble.. that's a total of 757 calories!  Oh well...

Got to get back to healthy eating again... been pigging out in the last three days and not running for nearly two weeks now; I have already gained  1.2 lbs as of this morning. Dammit!!!

DH and I went to have lunch at Castillo de Mexico restaurant after church today and I thought I really did good by choosing Grilled Mahi-Mahi Tacos but I couldn't resist the Mango Key Lime Pie from Publix Supermarket when we did grocery shopping--that small piece was 520 calories but bit it was really good. Yum!

75 Minutes Total Body Circuit Work-out

Seven days after injury, there's still twinge and tenderness in my shin and when I tried jogging this morning it still hurts… so instead I work out in our  mini-gym at home and posed for some new photos...this is me as of this morning (10-10-09) after I've lost 11.1 lbs however I don't have old picture of me to compare when I was 122.5 lbs five months ago.

I still have 3.6 lbs to lose to hit my goal!

This is the work-out I did today. I borrowed this DVD from the library yesterday and did the whole work-out for 75 minutes!

Yes, it was that long and the moves are very basic, straight forward and easy to follow but they are mix of abs, resistance exercises, interval cardio, weight training, body sculpting and stretching that relaxes the whole body afterward. I actually like the variations of exercises.

For sure I am going to be sore tomorrow because the moves are different from what I have been doing lately.

We went to Red Lobster for lunch today with my officemates to celebrate the boss birthday.  Red Lobster has a promotion going on:

Endless Shrimp®
Select two of your favorite shrimp preparations for $15.99 per person.
Choose from:
-Teriyaki Grilled Shrimp Served over wild rice pilaf.
-Cajun Shrimp Tossed with spicy Cajun butter sauce and served over wild rice pilaf.
   -Garlic Shrimp Scampi
   -Hand-Breaded Shrimp
   -Coconut Shrimp Bites
When you're ready for more, just let us know.

I ordered the Teriyaki - they are wood-grilled shrimp brushed with a tangy teriyaki glaze and oh boy they delish! My officemates were shocked to see me a chewed down 45 pieces of grilled teriyaki shrimps in less than 20 minutes. LOL  I reasoned out that's why eat a lot because I run regularly.  Little did they know I eat as much as I can to get my money's worth!  LOL.

First Running Injury

OMG!! Why now?!?! It's been 4 days since the last time I ran but my left leg is still not healed yet. I have been feeling the tenderness or soreness along the inner part of my left lower leg just below the calf but the good thing is it doesn't show any swelling or anything like that. Why is this happening to me in just about a week before my race?  Am I stressing myself too much about this race or am I training too hard?  I didn't think so. I am excited but certainly not nervous or anything because I am not planning to complete at all.  I already had a mindset to run just for fun and not worry about being on top 10 finish.

According to DH, it sounds like I may have running-related injury called shin splints and he thought that's because of over training--he said I am  over training myself,  too hard, too fast and too long!

From Mayo Clinic website:  The term "shin splints" refers to pain along the shinbone (tibia) — the large bone in the front of your lower leg. The pain is caused by an overload on the shinbone and the connective tissues that attach your muscles to the bone.

Shin splints are caused by an overload on the shinbone and the connective tissues that attach your muscles to the bone. The overload is often caused by specific athletic activities, such as:

  • Running downhill

  • Running on a slanted or tilted surface

  • Shin splints can also be caused by training too hard, too fast or for too long.

In most cases, you can treat shin splints with simple self-care steps:

Adequate rest. Avoid activities that cause pain, swelling or discomfort — but don't give up all physical activity. While you're healing, try low-impact exercises, such as swimming, bicycling or water running. If your shin pain causes you to limp, consider using crutches until you can walk normally without pain.

Ice the affected area. Apply ice packs to the affected shin for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, four to eight times a day for several days. To protect your skin, wrap the ice packs in a thin towel.

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Try ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Aleve), aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) to reduce pain.

Got to watch my calorie intake very closely since I will be having rice and fish for breakfast in the next few days. 13.19 Miles Outdoor Run

I found a new route for my run: From Hodges --> Atlantic Blvd (passing Atlantic Inter-coastal Waterway Bridge on San Pablo River)  --> Jacksonville Beach  (passing Mayport Flyover) --> Mayport  and A1A and back.

Approaching Atlantic Inter-coastal Waterway Bridge

Atlantic Inter-coastal Waterway Bridge on San Pablo River

Mayport Ramp/Flyover

These three photos are courtesy of Metro Jacksonville.com

Here's the comparison of  my latest Two OUTDOOR Ran.  My Sept 27 ran was a little slower due to heat and humidity on the highways as there is no shades at all.  Whereas today's ran is really nice because except on the bridges, there are shades from the tall tress along the highway... refreshing breeze and green sceneries made me feel so good. The view overlooking from the Atlantic Inter-coastal Waterway bride on San Pablo River is equally invigorating as well.

So I'll be having seafood for the next few days... thank heaven!  I had 2 cups of long grain rice and half of the grilled milkfish dipped in lemon and soy sauce for lunch and I couldn't ask for more;-)

I tried running as fast as I can this morning but the fastest I could do was 9 minutes per mile and I couldn't even last longer than a mile on that pace.

When I saw the pace of other runners; 5-7 minutes per mile, I feel like a loser already. Guess I am just going to do the run for fun and of course to get fit... not even thinking about competing to the 5K race anymore because I don't want to beat myself to it.

13.02 Miles Outdoor Run

When my mother-in-law emailed me the other day if I could come over to her house this weekend to install the new software to her PC, I thought that would be a good time to try to run from my house to hers.  Mapquest showed if I take the shortest distance which is going to Hodges to JTB to 9A and then exit to Baymeadows road, it would only be around 13 miles.  I want to try running bridges... and this flyover/loop between JTB and 9A is what gets me to do it.

Well, I woke up late this morning (forgot to set my alarm clock darn it!) and it was already 6:36 AM when I left the house... So I thought I am just gonna run maybe 8-10 miles depending on how hot the temp is going to be at 8:30AM. However, as soon as I hit JTB, I was already almost half way to mom's house and I thought with the extra lane still on construction and there's not too many cars on the highway anyway because it's Sunday, I was even more motivated to do it.

My first time to run on a bridge...13 miles from Hodges to JTB to 9A to Baymeadows road... this flyover/loop between JTB and FL 9A...oh boy the ran on this loop wasn't easy as I thought it was... going up is very hard but I made it ;-)   The price?  I got scolded by DH & MIL because they said first, aside from it is illegal to run on an interstate highway, it is also very, very  dangerous  because there is no path for walkers/runners on those roads and cars are going 65-80 miles per hour.  Glad there's no cop around that area early in the morning otherwise I would have been in jail by now :-P

Anyway, here's my stat from my iPod Touch: To compare my latest two 13 miles run on outdoor and treadmill; the ran on a treadmill was little faster yet I feel like it's harder than the outdoor ran because on treadmill, I ran on a steady pace whereas when I run outdoor, I have to yield or stop at the traffic light and to anything and everything on the highway.  Over all though, I preferred running outdoor...but that's just me.

My total calorie intake was a little high that's because I forgot to bring my own dinner to my part-time job last night so I ended up ordering a grilled chicken/grilled vegetable salad which comes with free loaf of bread from Long Horn Steakhouse... it was more convenient for me because LHS is just across the street from CompUSA... but at least I am making a healthy choice ;-)

30 Minutes ABS workout & Stretching

It's been a while since the last time I did abs work-out  so I figured it's about time to get back into the wagon and strengthen my core.  I have to integrate this abs workout into my weekly run because somebody is challenging me to wear 2 piece next summer:

Geri: I am also serious about that 2 piece challenge for you next summer. Maybe this will motivate me to do other workouts aside from running. Game? :)

Rhebs: To tell you the truth, I have never ever worn a 2-pc bathing suit out in public (beach) in my whole entire life… but you dare me to do it.. so YES!!! game na game ako!!! You really have a way of pushing the right button don’t you? So I am taking this challenge on to the next level (no towel or anything.. just 2 piece (bikini and bra only ;-)

Geri: Naku, ninerbiyos ako tuloy, sit-ups here I come! Let's pick a month and date. Yup, no towel :)

I am down to 112.6 lbs today.  I lost 1.6 lbs. last week so that brings my total weight loss to 9.9 pounds  in 13 weeks. Yaaay!   4 more pounds  to lose; a little over 3 more weeks to go before my race so I have to observe a very strict yet healthy and balanced diet until such time.

Rest

I feel ok this morning; not even sore or anything except I had bout of insomnia last night. I was tossing and turning until midnight so I decided to move to the other bedroom so I won't disrupt DH sleep.  I didn't fall asleep until 1:30 or so in the morning and was up again at 5:30 this morning coz my body clock is used to getting up between 5:00 to 5:30 AM.  Glad I was able to snooze for an hour on my lunch break otherwise it would have been a struggle to work until 9:30 in my part time job tonight.

13.01 Miles on Treadmill Run

Wow, 13 weeks on training and I now can run a half marathon in a little less than 3 hours  but ouch, ouch, ouch...my legs are just dead tired. I even had a hard time doing some stretching afterward.  I don't think I can ever run for full marathon...just the thought of running 26 miles make me sick to my stomach.

Today, my Nike+ says I have reached the Green level by syncing 158.94 total miles

Anyway, here's my stat from my iPod tonight:

With the calories I burned tonight I could actually eat up to 2,200 calories but it was already 8:40Pm when I got home from the gym and I don't have any appetite to eat something solid anymore.. instead, DH made me a protein drink with a frozen strawberry and banana... plus he brought home some sweet potato pound cake form work and they were a perfect treat for  me. Thanks, Darling!

Over all, my total calorie intake is just right....hope to lose at least a pound or more this week...I have two days more to go before I weigh in.
